How to read Canada processing times from India
Choose the right comparison
A country-specific visitor-visa estimate answers a different question from a program-wide permanent-residence estimate. Use the label on each result to understand which applicants it describes. A program-wide figure also covers applicants outside India; it is not an India-specific estimate.
Before comparing two numbers, check the application type, subtype, inside/outside-Canada setting, relevant province and unit. Comparing a period shown in weeks with a different application shown in months does not tell you whether your own file is faster or slower.
What the estimate can and cannot tell you
IRCC uses different methods for different processing-time categories. Some figures reflect completed applications; others estimate future processing. The published figure is not a deadline for your file. Read the official explanation for the application type and check what its processing clock includes. IRCC processing-time guidance.
Has the published estimate changed?
Where we have collected earlier observations, select a historical snapshot to compare dated estimates. A change in the published estimate describes the source data; it does not establish a change in the status of a particular application.
History starts with our first actual observation. A requested historical snapshot may be unavailable because we had not yet collected it. Missing history does not mean that IRCC published no estimate or that an application stopped progressing.
Where to check your own application
For a personal update, use the appropriate official account or status service. A processing-time page cannot see the progress of your file. If you receive a request for documents or another action, follow that request rather than treating a general estimate as a replacement for its instructions. Official application status guidance.
