Super Visa: the applicant and the host

Understand the two sides of preparation for a family visit.

The direct answer

Super Visa preparation involves both the visiting parent or grandparent and the host in Canada. Income, family size, invitation, insurance and medical requirements should be checked together.

Who should check this route

Parents and grandparents considering a longer temporary visit should compare Super Visa with the ordinary visitor route. Permanent residence sponsorship is a separate process.

Applicant and host evidence

Organize relationship records, the host’s status and financial records, and the required applicant evidence. Confirm how IRCC defines family size for the current income requirement.

Insurance and medical requirements

Verify the current insurance requirements before choosing a policy. Follow the official medical examination instructions rather than assuming a general health report will be accepted.

Fees and processing

Insurance and medical costs are separate from application fees. Check the current country-specific processing estimate with IRCC.

Common question

Does a Super Visa make the visitor a permanent resident? No. It is a temporary visitor route.

Work through the parent and host checklist together

Make two columns headed applicant and host. Under applicant, list identity, relationship evidence, location, proposed visit and the current medical and insurance requirements. Under host, list Canadian status, residence, invitation, family composition and the financial-support evidence. Assign a person and target date to each missing item so the parent is not waiting for a host document at the final stage.

Check the host's family-size calculation before comparing income. A household commitment can matter even when that person is not travelling. Keep a record of why each person was included or excluded. If relying on a particular income option, identify the official condition and the evidence that supports it instead of using an unsupported household total.

Questions to ask an insurer before payment

Ask which insurer issues the policy, whether it meets the current IRCC requirements, when coverage starts, what deductibles and exclusions apply, and how date changes or refunds work. Keep the written answers with the policy. The cheapest quotation may cover a different risk or use conditions you did not expect.

Before travelling, recheck the passport, visa or authorization and required insurance documents. Keep a copy accessible to the traveller. If circumstances or travel dates change, confirm the effect on coverage and application documents with the relevant provider; a general processing estimate cannot confirm a departure date.
