PR card or travel document: which should you check?
Start with where you are and how you plan to return.
If you are a permanent resident outside Canada without a valid PR card, review the permanent resident travel document instructions. Your location and method of return travel matter.
Identify the document you need
A PR card and a PR travel document serve different situations. Check the official instructions before making travel arrangements.
Prepare your records
Organize identity, permanent residence and travel records, then follow the checklist for the application you need.
Check status requirements
Review the applicable residency obligation information. An expired card does not by itself describe the whole status situation.
Fees and processing
Check the official fee and processing guidance. Do not assume an application will be completed before a booked journey.
Common question
Should I apply for both documents using the same process? No. Read the separate official card and travel document instructions.
A travel-document decision worksheet
Record where you are now, whether your PR card is valid, your intended return date and the exact mode of transport. Travelling on a commercial bus or train is different from entering in a private vehicle, even though both cross a land border. Check the boarding requirements for the actual carrier as well as the official immigration instructions.
If you are outside Canada without a valid card, review the PRTD route rather than applying for a visitor visa or eTA as if PR status had automatically ended. An expired card and loss of status are different issues. If a previous status decision exists, get qualified advice before choosing an application.
Organize residence evidence before requesting urgency
Prepare a dated travel history and the evidence supporting days in Canada or qualifying days abroad. Count each day once. Keep the applicable five-year period visible at the top of the worksheet so older trips are not accidentally included. The estimator cannot assess disputed dates or humanitarian circumstances.
If urgent processing is relevant, read the current criteria and collect the specific supporting evidence. A booked flight does not guarantee urgent service. Keep an alternative travel plan and avoid promising an employer or family member a return date based solely on a published average.
