# PR Cards & Travel

> Keep your status records and travel plans in order.

## Overview
Permanent residents may need a first, renewed or replacement PR card, or a permanent resident travel document when outside Canada. The correct route depends on your location and travel document situation.

## Who it is for
Permanent residents preparing a card application or checking travel back to Canada.

## Eligibility
Review the official card or travel document requirements, including the evidence requested about permanent resident status and time outside Canada.

## Documents to prepare
## Separate permanent-resident status from the travel document
An expired PR card does not by itself mean permanent-resident status has expired. The card is evidence of that status and an important boarding document. Confirm whether you need a first card, renewal, replacement or a permanent resident travel document before choosing a form. Canadian citizens do not renew PR cards.
Your location and mode of return matter. A permanent resident outside Canada without a valid card may need a PRTD to board a commercial carrier. Returning in a private vehicle has different document rules. Check the official instructions for the actual journey rather than assuming that entry by land always avoids the commercial-carrier requirement.

## Prepare the residence history before making travel commitments
Organize dates in Canada and abroad, including evidence behind any claimed qualifying time outside Canada. The residency obligation has rules for the first five years and for later rolling periods. The number of stamps in a passport is not a complete assessment, and qualifying days abroad require the relevant conditions to be met.
Our estimator flags totals that cannot fit the assessed period and asks you to keep categories separate so days are not counted twice. It does not assess humanitarian factors or guarantee the outcome of a residency examination. Seek qualified advice where there may be a shortfall, conflicting records or a previous status decision.

## Renewal and replacement require careful document checks
Follow the current instructions for photographs, identity evidence, addresses and submission. If a card was lost or stolen, identify the circumstances accurately and retain relevant reports. Keep copies of the submitted material and payment confirmation. Check how and where IRCC will deliver the document; do not assume a card can be mailed abroad to fit a travel date.
Urgent processing has its own evidence and eligibility requirements and is not guaranteed. Read the current instructions before buying tickets around an urgent request. For a first card, check whether the outstanding step relates to address or photo confirmation rather than submitting an unnecessary renewal application.

## Tell us which travel problem you need to solve
For an initial enquiry, provide your current country, whether the PR card is valid, the planned mode of return and whether travel is already booked. These details help direct the conversation to the right process. Do not send card numbers or passport copies in a public comment or initial enquiry.
We can discuss preparation support for PR-card and travel-document applications and coordinate regulated advice when status or residency questions need professional assessment. Before engaging, confirm the provider, scope, fees and realistic document-handling timeline. Processing estimates cannot promise that a document will arrive before a booked flight.

## Document checklist
- Identity and permanent residence records
- Photo meeting the official specifications
- Travel history and relevant residence evidence
- Lost or damaged card details where relevant
- Documents in the official application checklist

## Application steps
1. Check whether you need a card or travel document.
2. Review your travel and residence records.
3. Prepare the official checklist.
4. Submit through the appropriate official route.
5. Plan travel using valid documentation.

## Common mistakes
- Assuming an expired card alone ends PR status
- Booking travel without checking return documents
- Omitting trips from travel history

## Fees
Government fees are separate from our professional fees. Medical examinations, biometrics, insurance, translations and other third-party costs may apply. Confirm the current government fee with IRCC and request a written service scope before paying.

## Published professional packages
- **PR card renewal / replacement preparation** — C$149 (Canada; fixed). Scope: Travel record organization; Card application document preparation. Source: https://www.lifesetoverseas.com/canada/in-canada/pr-card-renewal (checked 2026-10-05).

These are published professional service prices, with GST included. Government fees and third-party costs are separate where applicable. Prices apply to the named package and region; confirm your scope and written quote before paying.

## Processing time
Processing times are estimates, not guarantees. Select your application type and country in Processing Times, or check directly with IRCC. A published estimate does not predict the decision date for your file.

## After you apply
Keep a copy of your submission, check the official account used to apply, and follow any request from IRCC. Respond by the deadline in your letter. Our preparation progress is separate from official IRCC application status.

## Understanding a refusal
Residency obligations and loss of status issues can require authorized legal advice. A card application and a status determination are different matters.

## Frequently asked questions
### I am outside Canada without a valid card. What should I check?
