## Overview
Citizenship applications and proof of citizenship are different journeys. Establish the right application type, then organize your identity, residence and supporting records.

## Who it is for
Permanent residents considering citizenship, families applying for children, and people checking proof of citizenship.

## Eligibility
Use the rules for your application type. Physical presence, language, tax and other requirements may apply. Citizenship by descent requires a separate review of the current rules.

## Documents to prepare
## Citizenship preparation starts with the right application
Applying for a grant of citizenship, replacing a citizenship certificate and applying for a Canadian passport are different processes. Establish whether you are seeking citizenship or proof of citizenship you may already hold. Parentage, birth circumstances and previous status can make this distinction important; do not rely on a physical-presence calculator to resolve it.
For a citizenship grant, review all applicable requirements, including permanent-resident status, physical presence, tax filing and any language, knowledge or prohibition requirements. A presence total addresses only one part of the application. Cases involving criminal proceedings, status concerns or special residence provisions need individual professional assessment.

## Reconstruct the travel record before choosing an application date
Use passports, tickets, calendars, employment records and available travel history to prepare a complete trip list. Record departure and return dates consistently. Check trips that cross midnight or involve several countries rather than estimating from memory. Keep a note of how uncertain dates were resolved.
Pre-PR time may count differently from time as a permanent resident and is subject to conditions and a cap. The five-year assessment window moves with the application date, so waiting a fixed number of days does not necessarily add that number to the qualifying total. Our estimator checks whether the entered totals fit the available window; use IRCC's detailed calculator for the actual travel record.

## Reconcile the application and supporting documents
Compare identity details, addresses, work and study history against the supporting records before submitting. Explain name changes and differences in documents. Follow the current instructions for language evidence, translations, photographs and the correct application format. Do not assume the documents used for a PR-card renewal cover a citizenship application.
Keep a full copy of the final application and presence calculation. If circumstances change after filing, check the official instructions for providing updates. Monitor for requests, test or interview instructions and ceremony notices, and read the actual notice carefully before making travel plans.

## Document checklist

5. Follow test, interview or ceremony instructions where applicable.

## Common mistakes
- Inaccurate travel dates
- Confusing a certificate application with a citizenship grant
- Using outdated descent rules

## Fees
Government fees are separate from our professional fees. Medical examinations, biometrics, insurance, translations and other third-party costs may apply. Confirm the current government fee with IRCC and request a written service scope before paying.

## Published professional packages
- **Citizenship application preparation** — C$299 (Canada; fixed). Scope: Travel and physical presence records; Application document preparation; Test preparation support. Source: https://www.lifesetoverseas.com/canada/in-canada/canadian-citizenship-application (checked 2026-10-05).

## Processing time
Processing times are estimates, not guarantees. Select your application type and country in Processing Times, or check directly with IRCC. A published estimate does not predict the decision date for your file.

## After you apply
Keep a copy of your submission, check the official account used to apply, and follow any request from IRCC. Respond by the deadline in your letter. Our preparation progress is separate from official IRCC application status.

## Understanding a refusal
Different rules apply to grants, proof and other citizenship services. Seek appropriately authorized advice for prohibitions or complex citizenship questions.

## Frequently asked questions
### Can a calculator confirm I qualify?
No. A physical presence estimator can help organize dates, but the official requirements and application assessment determine eligibility.
